Dr. Linda Chassman and Ellen Kinney are therapists whom use animals as an integral part of their therapy sessions. They said one of their main goals is to create a sense of calm in their sessions and the animals help in creating such an atmosphere.

Working with the dog Sasha this young girl practiced communication skills.

This story is from the archive, the assignment was photographed in September 2010 and published in the winter.

Dr. Linda Chassman sits with her 2-year-old cat Mazey. Dr. Chassman and her colleagues work with animals as an integral part of therapy. While Dr. Chassman and Mazey have only been working together since April when the Denver, Colorado office opened it's doors, she also worked with a cat named Norman for 10 years while practicing in California.

This is my first year getting the opportunity to work with a stylist who is entering NAHA, the North American Hairstylist Awards. Winning or placing in NAHA is comparable to a photographer winning a Pulitzer Prize.

So while in Provo Utah working on the Aveda Best Salon & Spa Utah book, I worked with stylist Heggy Gonzalez who is entering.

2010 Year in Review ~ The Highlights

My fifth time photographing DAM! (The Denver Academy of Makeup) I pushed myself, tried new things and I'm thrilled with the results!

I'm always honored when I get the opportunity to document the intimacies and beauty of a family.

This is the first summer in 5 years that I did not photograph a wedding. My summer was dedicated to making the Aveda Best Salons & Spas book of Colorado. I missed weddings, and the chance to document my friends get married at a park was a nice wedding spritzer.

I self-published a book of my work in Cuba over the past 3 years, Dulce Tormento. It took me more hours than I ever dreamed it would take, but I'm proud of the result. It is very satisfying to see all the different stories I've worked on in one place.

Summer 2010 was my fifth year growing food in the Elati Community Garden, and I wanted to grow more than just food, so a fellow gardener and I brought to life the idea of art fairs in the Elati Garden. Taking advantage of the gardens proximity to the Santa Fe art district and the talented gardeners, we toiled not only in the soil but to put on a event for the community, three in fact; July, August and September.

It was a lot of work, but seeing the garden lit up and decorated with artists wares and people gathered to chat and laugh made me feel good. SUCCESS!!

This year I was destined to get better at fashion photography. While shooting a live photo shoot at the Aveda Career Fair I was challenged with the distraction of the crowd and many different light sources but was graced with Rudy Miles makeup skills and two talented models.

Dale Le Monds, owner of Aveda Institutes' of Denver, Tucson and Provo, hired me to create a book of the top Aveda salons and spas in Colorado. The book filled my summer with scheduling and traveling to salons, photographing interiors, owners and stylists. Long hours at the computer designing the book put my design skills to the test.

It is a therapeutic and cathartic process putting together highlights of my work over the past year. Some moments I think "I should have" or "I could have" and other moments I think "Damn I worked hard this year! I'm blessed to have spent another year doing what I love and excel at!"

This year I became more active with my community; pioneering the Elati Garden Art Fairs, becoming a board member of the Art Directors Club of Denver (ADCD) http://adcdnews.com as well as attending and then volunteering at the Center for Digital Story Telling http://www.storycenter.org/

My photographic goals for 2011: challenge my fashion photography skills, experiment, try new things, make more digital stories, help others make digital stories, document my husbands transition from Cuba to the United States, work with a wonderful advertising agency to execute an original ad campaign, more editorial work (magazines and newspapers alike), attract wonderful couples who appreciate authentic family and wedding photography!!!

The Elati Garden First Friday Art Fair(s)

Elati Garden is a community garden and part of the Denver Urban Garden system. It has been my second summer home, sanctuary and haven for four wonderful summers now. The community surrounding this garden is talented and vibrant,,,thus my idea to start a First Friday Art Fair.

Only two block from the bumping Santa Fe art district, which comes alive on first Fridays, the garden is now the perfect starting point for an evening of savory food, inspiring art, good people and jamming vibrations.

Bringing people together in the name of art, community and ethically grown food is success to me!!!

The story covered people who are being taken advantage of with trial loan modifications.

The Bailey's both worked in the housing industry. Jesse worked as a Project Manager and Joleen had a job in Interior Design. Joleen was eight months pregnant when the housing industry crashed and soon both were laid off.

In this time of crisis the Bailey's took out home loan modifications in order to keep their home, however, the modifications have left them owing more on their house than before and with higher payments.

Jesse built this arbor for the Bailey's backyard wedding. It now holds 2-year-old Brooklyn's swing.

Jesse and Joleen are thankful to be employed once again but both are working outside of their field. Joleen recently designed a new kitchen for their home and Jesse installed it along with new wood floors. It is inspiring to see a family persevere in hard times and continue to grow.

Elati Gardens' First Friday Craft Fairs in July and August

The Elati Garden in the Santa Fe art district is part of the Denver Urban Garden system and a meeting ground for talented artists who are hosting a crafts fair to share their wares on Friday July 2nd and Friday August 6th from 1 pm to 8:30 pm.

Kids come by and get your faces painted, play carnival games and let your imagination run wild in the magical garden.

The Elati Garden, part of the Denver Urban Garden system, is located at 840 Elati Street Denver CO 80204 between 8th and 9th Streets on Elati just 2 blocks east of the Sante Fe Art District.

This neighborhood and garden is home to talented artists who will be selling their wares from 1pm to 8:30 pm on Friday July 2nd and Friday August 6th.

Attendees can enjoy a cold drink, snacks and music while perusing. There will be free carnival games and face painting for the kids.

Enjoy original art, crafts, chair massages and second hand items like CDs and books. 10% of proceeds go to the Elati Street Garden.

I was honored to photograph the Aveda Institute of Denver's Instructor Edwin Neil Competition for the second year. This year the instructors stepped up their game and really showed their talent!

The teams are made up of a three people. One team member cuts the hair, another styles the hair and the other applies the makeup.

The after images are submitted to the contest and the image is NOT RETOUCHED. The judges are looking at the 'RAW' talent of the contestants.

Over 6,000 registered at $50 a pop to raise money for the Dumb Friends League celebrating 100 years of caring for animals and finding them loving homes.

Participants walked with their pets for 2 miles around Washington Park in Denver, Colorado.

Adoring owners and happy dogs made for a little stinky but peaceful and entertaining day in the 'mile high city'

When visiting other places and witnessing stray dog and farrow cat problems it makes me realize how important efforts to keep animals off the streets are and what a difference it makes to a place. Thanks to the efforts of organizations such as The Dumb Friends League our city streets here in Denver are nearly free of homeless animals.

Digital Storytelling Workshop!!!

I had the most incredible experience at the Digital Storytelling workshop!

Thank you Daniel and Maryann for being the most patient and awesome facilitators ever!

I loved every minute of it. It was a fine group of professionals from a variety of backgrounds. I was surprised that 100% of the group produced such wonderful, powerful stories.

I was sad when it was over but can't wait to continue sharing my story.

The 5 Points Neighborhood - Textures - Post #1

The Revitalization of the 5 Points neighborhood has struck my interest and I've embarked on a long term project documenting the neighborhood which was historicaly Denver's immigrant and African American neighborhood.

To get my feet wet I photographed some textures in the neighborhood. I think Spring and Summer will bring lots of great days in the neighborhood...

USA Today recognizes a Denver woaman who donates milk to one of the only milk banks in the Country

Keely Shaw, 30, feeds her 5 month old son Halston while her 2 year old Wiley plays. Both Keely's sons were born premature in the 35th week and drank breast milk from the milk bank while Keely waited for her body to produce milk. She now donates breast milk to The Denver Milk Bank, one of the only milk banks in the country.

Keely has donated milk for 4 months and can donate for up to a year. The milk bank supplies donars with a breast pump, sanatized bottles and sanitizer for the machine. Keely is also working on becoming a la leche league leader.

Recycled Art

Around Valentines Day Teresa Castaneda had the idea to make roses out of toilet paper rolls. Many local boutiques are now carrying her flowers made of recycled skewers, toilet paper rolls and paper cups. She hopes to get recycled skewers from restaurants as she continues to grow her recycled flower business.

The Denver Urban Market, founded by James and Irina Bertini, is a new and year round farmers market located on the corner of 2nd and Santa Fe Drive @ 200 Santa Fe Drive.

Denver Urban Homesteading is dedicated to promoting local agricultural and good food.

When Irina moved to the United States from Central Asia she was dismayed by the poor quality of the processed foods eaten here. James reached his wife's level of awareness and after he began the campaign to change Denver's restrictive chicken and goat laws.

The owners of the market, James and Irina, are very much social entrepreneurs. According to Wikipedia, "A social entrepreneur is someone who recognizes a social problem and uses entrepreneurial principles to organize, create, and manage a venture to make social change.

Whereas a business entrepreneur typically measures performance in profit and return, a social entrepreneur assesses success in terms of the impact s/he has on society as well as in profit and return..."

And so grows their efforts to bring the food of local and ethical farmers to the plates of Denver residents.

David Rippe, co-owner of Kiowa Valley Organics gets some eggs for customers. David is a second generation Colorado farmer. Both David and his wife Sara are purists when it comes to farming practices and love to educate the public on such practices.

Sara Rippe, co-owner of Kiowa Valley Organics, Inc. educates customers about grass fed and grass finished beef. Sara and David believe that by feeding their cows only grass, as they are naturally grass eaters, there systems stay at full function and do not need antibiotics. Their cows are both grass fed and grass finished. Some farmers feed the cows grass but then the last 100 days or so days of the cows life they are fed corn, for example, and that is called a corn finish.

Katie Aguero, 20, sells honey for her father Lee of Lee's Bees.

Katie explained when honey is heated it takes out the pollen which is beneficial for energy, allergies and nutrition.

Lee does not use any chemicals in the hives to kill mites he simply uses vinegar and silver. Lee said chemicals also kill many of the bees, his natural methods do not kill any bees.

Lee also explained that there is a lot of marketing fraud involved in honey. Clove Honey for example should only be called clover honey if the bee keeper is positive the bees are getting all the pollen from clover. He said there is not enough clover in Colorado to produce clover honey. The best way to be an organic bee keeper is to not use chemicals in the hives and to try and make sure nothing is sprayed for a 7 mile radius, the pollen territory of the bees.

Bill Flentje with Ranch Foods Direct distributes meats from Colorado and nearby states. Bill said his business has grown exponentially since the market opened!

Bill distributes hormone and antibiotic free meats. He also uses a rinse and chill kill process which is inline with the Islamic Halal practice of meat preparation.In the Rinse and chill process the animal is killed then the blood is immediately drained and the meat chilled. The term Halal is used to designate food seen as permissible according to Islamic law.

Neil Fischer of Buffalo Peak Ranch relaxes during a brief lull at he market. Neil's buffalo are free range and located a few hours south of Denver.

Anson Wilder, employee of Windsor Dairy, serves samples of raw milk. Raw milk can only be purchased with a membership to the dairy farm. Pasteurization is the process of heating milk to kill any possible bacteria but this process also boils out the enzymes that help the body digest the milk. The owners of Windsor Diary are bovine veterinarians and believe in the benefits of raw milk and test the milk regularly.

A Room with a View

Sunday I got the news that my cousin (from New York) had shattered his elbow while skiing in Steamboat Springs. He was set for surgery on Monday. I drove up Monday and picked him up from surgery. He had a plate and 13+ pins put in his elbow. At 3am Tuesday morning when the local anesthesia had worn off the pain management began and continued for the next few days...but the room had a great view!

It was good for me to get out of my own head and help someone in need.

One sunny day I broke away from the hotel room to stretch my legs and check out the little town of Steamboat SPrings

Cuban Artist Armando Lira Reguera

Armando Lira Reguera is celebrating his debut on the Havana art scene. A woods craftsman with rare talent depicts cultural scenes of his life using Cuba's colorful variety of wood. His tools are simply raw strips of wood, a hand saw, exacter knife, wood glue (only used for stubborn wood that won't lay flat) and sand paper. "No paint," emphasizes Armando.
